چکیده

Foreground emission and scattered light from interplanetary dust (IPD) particles and emission from Galactic stellar sources are the greatest obstacles for determining the cosmic infrared background (CIB) from diffuse sky measurements in the ∼ 1 to 5 μm range. We describe a new method for deriving the CIB at near infrared wavelengths which reduces the uncertainties associated with the removal of the Galactic stellar emission component from the sky maps. The method produces positive residuals at 3.5 and 4.9 μm, of which only the 3.5 μm residual is nearly isotropic. We consider our result as a tentative detection of the CIB at this wavelength.

Detection of the Cosmic Infrared Background at 2.2 and 3.5 Μm Using Dirbe Observations

We compare data from the Diffuse InfraRed Background Experiment (DIRBE) on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite to the the Wainscoat et al. (1992) model of the infrared sky. The model is first compared with broadband K (2.2 µm) star counts. Its success at K-band gives credence to its physical approach which is extrapolated to the L-band (3.5 µm). We have analyzed the histograms of th...

The Cobe Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment Search for the Cosmic Infrared Background: I. Limits and Detections

The Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) spacecraft was designed primarily to conduct a systematic search for an isotropic cosmic infrared background (CIB) in ten photometric bands from 1.25 to 240 μm. The results of that search are presented here. Conservative limits on the CIB are obtained from the minimum observed brightness in all-sky maps ...

The Cobe Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment Search for the Cosmic Infrared Background: Iv. Cosmological Implications

A direct measurement of the extragalactic background light (EBL) can provide important constraints on the integrated cosmological history of star formation, metal and dust production, and the conversion of starlight into infrared emission by dust. In this paper we examine the cosmological implications of the recent detection of the EBL in the 125 to 5000 μm wavelength region by the Diffuse Infr...

COBE Observations of the Cosmic Infrared Background ?

The Diffuse InfraRed Background Experiment (DIRBE) on the COsmic Background Explorer (COBE) measured the total infrared signal seen from space at a distance of 1 astronomical unit from the Sun. Using time variations as the Earth orbits the Sun, it is possible to remove most of the foreground signal produced by the interplanetary dust cloud [zodiacal light]. By correlating the DIRBE signal with ...

Infrared Colors and Variability of Evolved Stars from COBE DIRBE Data

For a complete 12 μm flux-limited sample of 207 IRAS sources (F12 ≥ 150 Jy, |b| ≥ 5), the majority of which are AGB stars (∼87%), we have extracted light curves in seven infrared bands between 1.25 μm − 60 μm using the database of the Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) instrument on the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) satellite. Using previous infrared surveys, we filtered these l...
